When I was young, I used to run around with an aged World War II vet named Wilson Wayne. Willie was a genuine West Virginia hillbilly who had survived dozens of bombing-runs over Germany in a B-52… and had the shrapnel scars to prove it. Willie hated politicians, and he used to say “they’re as crooked as a barrel full of fish-hooks.” If you’ve ever tried to untangle a wad of fish-hooks, you can appreciate this analogy. You get hold of one, and try to separate it from the rest… and the next thing you know, the whole pile comes out of the tackle box with it. They all hang together because they are all CROOKED.
I have seen this same dynamic everywhere I’ve been, and, having come to understand the Biblical explanation of mankind’s “fallen-nature,” I view this thing as something to be expected. It’s just the nature of the game!
People who are willfully engaging in activities that they know are wrong are forced to create a mental-landscape based on rationalization… and if that is the case, it is very helpful to surround oneself with others who are committed to similar forms of vice. When everybody you hang around with is doing the same type of wrong things, it is very easy to “normalize” bad behavior. Sin itself simply becomes “the cost of doing business.”
It’s like one of the little children that I helped to raise once told me when I scolded her for lying. She was only five or six years old, but she responded with utter certainty “but everybody lies!” What she was really saying was “why should I be the only one operating at a self-imposed deficit!?” Her point was well-taken and I told her that… however…
This brings us to the point of this conversation.
We have a group of elected officials here in Douglas County (and for that matter, in this area of rural Southwest Oregon) who have adopted the very same position (based on the very same conclusions) that my little girl had arrived at. They are mostly middle-aged adults. She was five.
Personally, I expect a little bit more out of a segment of our society that professes to be “public-servants,” or even more damning… “Christians.” SERIOUSLY?
A while back, all 19 of the elected officials in this area of Oregon signed a letter written by one of our County Commissioners. This letter demanded our local Gop Central Committee to recall six of us from the DCRCC Executive Board for reasons that were at best arbitrary and capricious. Indeed, in the end, it was just “dirty politics” to ensure that David Brock Smith had the ammunition he needed to slander a political opponent who was pulling ahead of him in the 2024, District One, State Senate, Republican Primary. With one letter, signed by all of our elected officials, under the title of (and in the capacity of) each of their elected positions… our commissioners attempted to permanently damage our small group of committed “America First” patriots, now known as “the Roseburg Six.”
And the worst part? Nearly all of our fellow-PCPs (many of whom had been recruited, appointed, and sworn in at the Central Committee meeting just before the recall) succumbed to the pressure and voted for our recall. A number of slanted testimonies were offered by our accusers, but not one legitimate reason for recalling us was ever given.
So, what was the real driver behind this malicious, personal attack by our commissioners?
HATRED… based on the fact that our small group of Republicans simply refuse to stoop to the type of avarice and corruption that has become normalized in Douglas County. The Roseburg Six (and friends) are true public-servants who have a primary goal of bringing back integrity to our local and state politics. This mission is currently focused on our elections, which are under the control of this local group of elected officials who are all compromised… or they would never have signed Chris Boice’s letter to recall us.
Vote-By-Mail has opened up opportunities to cheat that our commissioners… and the County Clerk that does their bidding… can simply not resist. Just like the little girl, they say to themselves “but everybody lies, and everybody cheats… right?… RIGHT!” The bottom-line is that they are enriching themselves and they want to stay in power.
These guys ARE like a barrel full of fish-hooks… and they are going to keep cheating and lying until they get busted. The most disappointing part of it all is that so many of our fellow-Republicans just go along with their program. The level of rationalization is sometimes profound to me, but once again, as the Bible clearly teaches, this is the nature of sinful man… however…
